What does plastic have to do with climate change?.

The vast majority of plastics are derived from fossil fuels. Plastic production's impact on the world climate this year alone equates to the the output of 189 coal-fired power stations - which is only part of the problem. Every day around 8 million pieces of plastic makes their way into our oceans. Our oceans provide the largest natural carbon sink for greenhouse gases and plastics significantly disrupt this process by directly choking and smothering "a host of marine animals and habitats and can take hundreds of years to break down." You can read more about this on the WWF's website .
